NCLEX-PN Review Requirements


TEST PLAN STRUCTURE
Introduction A- Test taking strategies ( 1 hour)

            The first day of the review will help the students to give edge on what they need in preparation for the NCLEX-PN® exam. This encompasses the learner to think critically on the questions, analyze it, avoid the distracters and choose wisely. Test taking strategies will guide the student on tips for answering multiple choice test questions correctly through proper elimination and according to its prioritization.

In test-taking day you will learn:
1. The test format, grading policy and up to date changes on the test.
2. How to develop critical thinking skills.
3. How to use the nursing process to meet the client needs.
4. How to analyze the question and identify the four critical elements.
5. How to avoid “misreading” the question.
6. How to avoid “reading into” the question.
7. How to eliminate incorrect options, and chose between the two best options.
8. How to answer communication questions.
9. How to manage test anxiety and avoid undesirable test behaviors such as answering the questions as a “Philosopher”.
10. How to prioritize responsibilities and delegate patient care.
11. How to answer ethical and legal issues related questions.

Introduction B - Take the diagnostic pretest

            Answer the 200 question Diagnostic Pretest for 5 hours, with optional break time. This assesses learners’ performance in answering questions regarding the content of each lesson. Also, serves as a checklist of the learners’ strengths and weaknesses.

I. SAFE AND EFFECTIVE CARE ENVIRONMENT
a. Review lesson 1- Coordinated care (2 hours)

  • The practical/vocational nurse collaborates with health care team members to facilitate effective client care.
    • Includes:
      • Advance directives
      • Informed consent
      • Client care assignments
      • Information technology
      • Client rights
      • Legal responsibilities
      • Collaboration with interdisciplinary team
      • Performance improvement (quality improvement)
      • Concepts of management and supervision
      • Confidentiality/ information security

      • Staff education

b. Review lesson 2- Safety and Infection control (2 hours)

  • The practical/vocational nurse contributes to the protection of clients and health care personnel from health and environmental hazards.
    • Includes:
      • Accident/ Error/ Injury prevention
      • Reporting of Incident/ Event/ Irregular occurrence/ Variance
      • Ergonomic principles
      • Handling hazardous and Infectious materials
      • Restraints and Safety devices
      • Home safety
      • Safe use of equipment
      • Internal and External disaster plans
      • Security plan
      • Medical and Surgical asepsis
      • Standard/ Transmission-based/ Other precautions

II. Review lesson 3- HEALTH PROMOTION AND MAINTENANCE (9 hours)

  • The practical/ vocational nurse provides nursing care for clients that incorporates knowledge of expected stages of growth and development and prevention and/or early detection of health problems.
    • Includes:
      • Aging process
      • Health promotion/ screening program
      • Ante/Intra/Postpartum and newborn care
      • High risk behaviors
      • Data collection techniques
      • Human sexuality
      • Developmental stages and transitions
      • Immunizations
      • Disease prevention
      • Lifestyle choices
      • Expected body images changes
      • Self-care
      • Family planning

III. Review lesson 4 - PSYCHOSOCIAL INTEGRITY (4 hours)

  • This assists with promotion and support of the emotional, mental and social well-being of clients.
    • Includes: (PSYCHIATRIC NURSING)
      • Abuse or neglect
      • Sensory/ perceptual alterations
      • Behavioral management
      • Situational role changes
      • Coping mechanisms
      • Stress management
      • Crisis intervention
      • Substance-related disorders
      • Cultural awareness
      • Suicide/ violence precautions
      • Endo of life concepts
      • Support systems
      • Grief and loss
      • Therapeutic communication
      • Mental health/ illness concepts
      • Therapeutic environment

IV. PHYSIOLOGIC INTEGRITY
a. Review lesson 5 - Basic care and comfort (3 hours)

  • The practical/vocational nurse provides comfort to clients and assistance in the performance of their activities of daily living.
    • Includes:
      • Assistive devices
      • Nutrition and oral hydration
      • Elimination
      • Palliative/ comfort care
      • Mobility/ Immobility
      • Personal hygiene
      • Nonpharmacological comfort interventions
      • Rest and sleep

b. Review lesson 6 - Pharmacological therapies (18 hours)

  • The practical/vocational nurse provides care related to administration of medications and monitors clients who are receiving parenteral therapies.
    • Includes:
      • Adverse effects
      • Medication administration
      • Contraindications and compatibilities
      • Pharmacological actions
      • Dosage calculations
      • Pharmacological agents
      • Expected effects
      • Side effects
  • Pharmacological terms and responsibilities
  • Classification of medication by Body system
  • Classification of medications by health status
  • Total parenteral nutrition: Nursing care of clients
  • Blood product administration
  • Dosage calculations

c. Review lesson 7 - Reduction of Risk potential (8 hours)

  • The practical/ vocational nurse reduces the potential for clients to develop complications or health problems related to treatments, procedures or existing conditions.
    • Includes:
      • Diagnostic tests
      • Laboratory values
      • Potential for alterations in body systems
      • Potential for complications of diagnostic tests
      • Treatments
      • Procedures
      • Surgery or health alterations
      • Therapeutic procedures
      • Vital signs

d. Review lesson 8 - Physiological adaptation (40 hours)

  • The practical/vocational nurse participates in providing care for clients with acute, chronic or life-threatening physical health conditions.
    • Includes:
      • Alterations in body systems
      • Medical emergencies
      • Basic pathophysiology
      • Radiation therapy
      • Fluid and electrolyte imbalances
